UnitingCare's license to operate the Sydney MSIC has been extended until November 2011. We offer flexible work shifts on a part time, temporary or casual basis to team orientated health professionals willing to be part of this important initiative.
Staff will be employed through the War Memorial Hospital, Waverley, a Uniting Care facility of South Eastern Area Health Service. Secondments with recognition of all entitlements from other Area health Services are also encouraged.

Job Description
Position: Part-time/Casual MSIC Nurse
Award Classification: Registered Nurse
Responsible to: Manager MSIC
Essential Qualification:
Current qualifications as a registered nurse (List A) and 2 years post graduate experience.
- Ability to work in a demanding and changeable environment
- Understanding of the health and social issues related to injecting drug use
- Sound knowledge of safe injecting practices
- Demonstrated computer competence in using computer databases
- An understanding and commitment to contemporary approaches to drug related issues
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary team
Desirable Qualification:
Familiarity with relevant local health, housing, welfare and legal services
Previous experience performing clerical duties, needle syringe services, client assessment, crisis intervention, education, counselling and referral
Experience in administering basic life support
Performance Management:
Initially after 1 month then again at 3 months
Hours of Duty:
Casual or Part-time Rostered up to 30 hrs per week

Statement of Role:
To provide MSIC clients with the highest possible standard of care by supervising injecting, preventing and managing drug overdose and addressing general health care and other drug related issues including referrals to primary health care, psycho-social support, practical living assistance and drug treatment as appropriate.
Statement of Key Responsibilities:
Maintain own knowledge and expertise in effective service delivery – especially in the areas of: safe injecting; basic life support/resuscitation ; care of clients who have overdosed with opiates and/or other drugs.
Maintain expertise in drug & alcohol assessment, primary health care, counselling and crisis intervention.
Provide client assessment, observation, clinical assistance, and as appropriate.
Assess registered clients seeking to use the Injecting Room including assessment of drug use and intoxication
Monitor and advise regarding injecting practices of clients using the Injecting Room.
Provide close observation of clients during the post-injecting period.
Collect and enter client and service data for operational and evaluation purposes.
Maintain high standards of service delivery and compliance with relevant legislative and policy documents.
Maintain regular and clear communication with supervisors regarding client and staff management and operational issues.
To display an attitude and behave in a manner which is in keeping with the philosophy of the MSIC.
Liaise and consult with other service providers and agencies to provide comprehensive referral options.
Attend community, health service, university, hospital, and other meetings as appropriate.
To participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of an annual work plan.
To perform other duties not inconsistent with the Award, Agreement and Terms of Employment as may be directed or implied from time to time.

- report accidents, incidents and potential hazards immediately to their Supervisor
- be familiar with Emergency and Evacuation procedures
- comply with Occupational Health and Safety requirements
- take reasonable care of health and safety of others
Mandatory in-service Programs:
It is the responsibility of each staff member to:
- satisfactorily complete annual fire drill training
- satisfactorily complete annual CPR training
- satisfactorily complete an infection control program
- attend appropriate Child at Risk Notification training
Continuous Quality Improvement:
It is the responsibility of each staff member to be aware of the Policy and Procedure Manual(s) for the MSIC and work within the principles contained therein.
Each staff member is expected to be committed to quality service and to participate in activities to enhance continuous quality improvement

Essential Qualifications:
- Qualifications in a relevant discipline
- 2 years experience working with injecting drug users
- Ability to work in a demanding and changeable environment
- Understanding of the health, social and legal issues related to injecting drug use
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary team
- An understanding and commitment to contemporary approaches to drug related issues
- Demonstrated competence in using computer databases
Desireable Qualifications:
Experience with child protection and youth support issues
Familiar with local services pertinent to this population such as health, housing, welfare and legal Understanding of basic life support practices
Previous experience in needle syringe services, drug and alcohol assessment, crisis counselling and referral
Performance Management:
Initially after 1 month and again at 3 months
Hours of Duty:
Part-time and/or casual shifts including day shifts, weekends and late nights

Plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate health promotion campaigns.
